Many countries in our world celebrate an Independence Day – in fact, here in the United States, ours is only a few days away – and there is no reason why people in fantasy worlds should not celebrate them as well. Below I outline several ways that Heroic, Paragon, and Epic tier campaigns can benefit from the introduction of this holiday.
Heroic Tier
- The PCs are asked to help setup the festivities (high role-playing, low combat campaigns).
- The PCs are asked to get supplies for the celebration from a nearby city.
- The PCs are asked to guard the perimeter or the village to make sure kobolds do not attack during the celebration.
- The PCs are asked to look out for pickpockets while people busy partying and/or getting drunk in the crowded streets.
- The PCs are hired by an organization to pick pockets while people are busy partying and/or getting drunk in the crowded streets.
Paragon Tier
- Nearby trolls want to join in the festivities, but partying for trolls mean maiming and killing villagers.
- The colorful sky illumination wands (fireworks) that the city council bought were cursed.
Epic Tier
- The PCs freed an enslaved group of people who formed a kingdom and now celebrate the party on their independence day (shows the players that their actions can significantly shape the world).
- Abberations from the far-realm are planning on enslaving a city-state on their independence day.
There are many other ways to include independence days in your campaign. Please feel free to add to the list in the comments.
