New Role-Playing Group

As of Thursday night, I have joined a newly formed Dungeons & Dragons group. This group includes a couple of members from groups that I was previously in, including Vanir from Critical-Hits.com as the Dungeon Master, so it was pretty easy to get into the game. This is a good thing as I’ve only played 4th Edition three times, the last time was at Gen Con last year, and I haven’t played any role-playing game on a regular basis for about 2 years. That’s not to say that I haven’t been role-playing, just not on a regular basis.

Jed Movawae – the Wild Elf Evoker that I am playing – left his elven homeland when his kinfolk ordered him to move away from there. Since then, he has been bouncing between large cities and doesn’t feel tied down to any one locale. I would post a picture, but my artistic ability is only slightly above that of a kindergartner, so I will opt to describe him instead. Jed is 5’6″, weighs 145 lbs., has light green eyes, silvery grey hair, and pale skin with a subtle bluish tinge. If anyone wants to submit their rendition of Jed, feel free to send it in and I will make sure that it gets posted on the blog. Or you can post a link in the comments to your impression of Jed.

Thus far, things do not bode well for our party. We are scouts / errand boys (and girls) for a military force heading to Waterdeep. However, he were sent to Triboar first to bring back several deserters. When we reached what we expected to be Triboar, we found staves with arcane symbols etched into them at four corners of a cross between stone and a Jello experiment gone horribly awry. Why examining this unusual structure (and contemplating throwing in an animal companion to see if the structure is harmful), things turn Lovecraftian.

The mass starts to quiver and spits out five humanoid oozes. We quickly (okay, rather slowly) dispatch the monstrosity only to find – to our horror – that a couple of hundred more have now popped out. After running back to the rest of the unit as quickly as humanly (and elvenly) possible, we are met with incredulity. That is, until they remember the story of the mad man that they have locked up. He was told to place the poles around the corners of Triboar and that something would happen. Something did in fact happen, and just as we were getting ready to smack him around a bit for being so stupid, the alarm was sounded. The ooze men had followed us back to town.

Since we are only playing every other week, it will be awhile before I can post on whether we stay and help fight, or use the encampment as a human shield while we flee further afield. What I do know is that Triboar was a beta test and the same thing is scheduled for Waterdeep next. Our travel plans may be changing significantly.
